K5 Learning Online Reading and Math Program Review #K5Learning

Any time I see the opportunity to review an educational product, I jump at the chance.  It gives us an opportunity to try out new ways to learn for free. It's also a nice opportunity to try out stuff before you buy it. K5Learning.com is a personal, online reading and math enrichment program, for grades K-5.  They offer a free online assessment tool, which I had both of my kids take, to see where their strengths and weaknesses are. All you do is fill out an online request form, then they email you a link to your child's assessment. You can choose to have them tested in reading or math or both.  I chose both, and had both kids take the assessment. They were really accurate!  We were then able to log-in to their accounts and set up a learning plan.

As it turns out Sonshine (although highly gifted in some areas, he was reading before he was potty trained...) is a horrendous speller, so he was still able to use this program although technically he is past the 5th grade. I will admit it, I am a horrendous speller as well, and if it weren't for spell check this blog would be a hot mess (more that it already is...)  Sonshine likes this online spelling program and likes to keep records of the words he needs to work on.  I also found that K5learning.com was good for him to use for math review or practice, as there is timed tests for addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.  Also he can work on those pesky fractions!  He likes to see how quickly and accurately he could do his facts, and tries to beat his old times. Did I mention that he actually keeps records?

Teenie has been advancing quickly in her reading but could still use additional practice. She liked that after completing lessons, she was rewarded by being able to play a game. I like that the incentive of a game motivated her to keep working.  There is also a lot of animation on the site that keeps kids engaged.  Lessons can be assigned by parents and so can spelling words, so Sonshine's records come in handy!

K5Learning.com offers a free 14-day trial, a great selection of free math and reading worksheets sorted by grade level and a bookstore where you can purchase and download workbooks at affordable prices.  I think this program is a great supplement to school or for kids that could use a little extra help.
