Usually during summer break we continue with some of our homeschooling activities, but this year we have decided to let the kids have a "real" break, by unschooling for the summer.  I have been super busy planning our curriculum for the next school year. So between sleepovers, swimming, laser tag and mini golf, the kids have plenty to do but do have a lot of downtime in between where they get "bored" and "don't have anything fun to do."

 Especially since this summer the weather here in the desert has been far from ideal. The wind has been blowing almost non-stop, making grilling or using the fire pit practically impossible. And it hasn't been as hot as it usually is but very humid! We have had a quite a few dangerous summer thunderstorms, flash floods and large fires burning nearby, that have kept us trapped in the house. Sometimes without power and you know what that means. NO VIDEO GAMES!

Code Master by Think Fun lets you play the video game behind the scenes! Playing as an avatar, you travel through 60 different levels collecting power crystals. Code Master teaches you how to “think like a computer,” which is helpful for those who are interested in advanced computer science.  Being able to think this way, is often a predictor of how well a person does with the field of computer science.  I am always eager to learn more about computer science have been increasingly seeking toys, games and activities for the kids that encourage learning and practicing STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) skills.

My first impression of the Code Master game, is that it reminded me a lot of Minecraft with the way that it looked.  As you can imagine the kids wanted to play right away, problem is that it is only a one player game.  Upon opening the box I noticed that the all of the materials included were colorful, well made and sturdy.  After reading the manual we were ready to play.  We took turns and quickly realized that this was a logic game and though it starts off easily gets increasingly difficult as you progress further in game.

We were big fans of Think Fun's Robot Turtles (you can see our review here) and Code Master is a more advanced version which is perfect for older kids and adults that are interested in computer programming.  Although Code Master is a single player board game, we still had a good time watching each other "write the program" and then "running" them.  Code Master is available exclusively at Target and Target.com
