Everyone who knows me, knows that I am an avid reader. I love books and have quite the stash in my house. Books invading every empty space and crevice of my home. So when I was chosen to review any book I wanted from the Creativa company, "an independent publisher of exceptional and unique fiction." I picked The Cartographer by Craig Gaydas a young adult science fiction novel. I prefer print but was sent a copy via download to review. I have to admit, that I put it off forever because I hate reading on devices. The reason why is because I tend to read for long stretches at a time, and I speed read, which is much easier for me to do on paper than it is on a screen. However, I read the preview for this book and was pretty interested in reading this story.
So basically what happens is two teens are cave exploring in Carlsbad, New Mexico. Sixteen year old Nathan, accidentally unlocks an ancient artifact, stumbles into a wormhole and is recruited by a mishmash cast of alien characters to help save the universe. First of all...great makings for a movie! The storyline takes off right away so no waiting around waiting for the writer to get to the point. I don't want to give too much of the story away, but it was funny, exciting adventure that was well thought out and well written. As a reader, I was engaged for the entire story, and I daresay that I am hoping for a book two soon!
As a parent who screens everything before I let my child check it out. I would say that there is some light language in this book but is not used excessively, mostly the main character uses the phrase "Jesus Christ!" a few times and aside from the occasional "d---," there was also "son of a b----" in there a few times. It was right along the lines of most of the other young adult books I have read. I think this would be a great Summer reading book for boys who aren't really into books. Nathan is easy to relate to with his snarky teen sarcasm and the other characters are very likable and funny at times.
