It's no secret...I love kitchen gadgets! The only thing I love more than kitchen gadgets is vintage cookbooks, but that's a different story...
I was selected to review the Orblue Propresser Garlic Press, which I was in dire need of because I had broken my old garlic press, and have been using jarred garlic ever since. Which in my opinion is super convenient but doesn't have the same freshness as fresh garlic.
My old press was made out of some kind of metal with plastic handles, since I broke it, it was probably poorly and wimpy made in the first place. So when the Propresser Garlic Press arrived at my door, I was pleasantly surprised when I opened it and saw that it was made from super strong stainless steel! It's super heavy and well-made and looks like it will last for decades.
I took it out of the box and peeled up a bunch of garlic cloves, which is a pain in the butt. I wish I could find something to help me with that... The first time I used it I stuck in a big clove and noticed how much room was in the basket. So I put in another clove, then I squeezed the handles, which took both hands for me. The Propresser made quick work of all of the garlic I peeled. It's a really nice press to use and does a great job pressing garlic.
The only negative I found with this garlic press, is that it's not as easy to clean as advertised. I was supposed to be able to just flip the basket and rinse it clean. Not that it's hard to clean in the first place anyway, I rinsed with hot water and there was still garlic residue in the basket. A couple of quick swipes with the dish sponge and it was clean. That's a small negative and me being nit-picky for the sake of giving an honest review.
I love this press and it is a tool that is a kitchen necessity if you love garlic. It is sold in a bundle with a quirky e-book that has tons of kitchen and cooking tips. There is a few recipes thrown in as well, but I would have liked to have seen a few more. I love new recipes. Speaking of recipes I thought I'd let y'all know what I did with all of the garlic I pressed. I didn't want to waste it so I decided to make some of my Garlicky Mashed Potatoes to serve with dinner.
Garlicky Mashed Potatoes
For garlic lovers only, these are super tasty and go well with roasted or fried chicken, and pork or beef pot roasts. My daughter hates garlic, but LOVES these potatoes. You boil the garlic with the potatoes, it gives them a nice garlic flavor without all of the garlic breath later. If you don't like garlic as much as we do, feel free to use less. This recipe makes about 8 servings.
Ingredients
3 lbs Potatoes scrubbed clean and cubed, if you are using them skin on. Or washed, peeled and cubed for no-skin potatoes. I used "Cal White" and left the skin on.
6 cloves of garlic pressed
6 oz evaporated milk
6 TBSP butter, margarine or combination of both
salt and pepper
reserved potato water
Put potatoes in a pot and cover with cold water. Add 2 tsp of salt to water. Bring to a boil and cook for 20 minutes, add pressed garlic and cook until potatoes are tender. Drain reserving 1 cup of the potato water. In the same pot (who wants to make more dishes to wash later?) add potatoes back to the pot, then add all of the butter (or margarine), 1/2 teaspoon each of salt and pepper and the evaporated milk, a cup of the potato water, and turn the heat on low. Mash potatoes, and add potato water little by little until potatoes are your desired consistency. Be careful not to over mash, or stir, your potatoes will be gummy. Season to taste if necessary.
